Entire year group at Bury high school told to self-isolate after coronavirus case

An entire year group at a Bury high school has been told to isolate following a confirmed case of coronavirus.

The positive test on a pupil in year 11 at Woodhey High School, in Ramsbottom, means the whole year must self-isolate.

Following guidance from Public Health England and the Department for Education, most secondary schools have put year groups into bubbles, so once there's a positive case of the virus, every student in that year is affected by the restrictions.

An email sent to parents and carers over the weekend read: "It is with regret that I write to inform you that Woodhey High School has had the first positive test for the coronavirus for one of our pupil population whilst the school has been in session.

"The positive test has been for one of our Year 11 pupils.

"This means that Year 11 pupils should not attend school on Monday 21st September 2020."

The high school is one of a number in Bury having to send year groups and classes home amid confirmed cases, with others including Tottington High School, Elton High School and Parrenthorn High School.

As of Friday evening, at least 177 primaries and secondaries across Greater Manchester had confirmed cases of Covid-19.

However, the exact number is expected to be much higher as there is no official record kept.
