Entire Rhyl school has had to close with more than 450 pupils forced to self isolate

A school that combines primary and secondary students has been forced to close because of a high number of coronavirus cases.

It means that 452 pupils at Christ the Word Catholic School in Rhyl are now having to self-isolate as a result.

It comes after 101 pupils and a member of staff were sent home from the school on Thursday (October 15) for the same reason.

It is also third time that coronavirus cases associated with the school have been reported this month.

The decision was made following discussions between the school, Denbighshire Council and Public Health Wales.

The Christ the Word childcare facility has also closed, Denbighshire County Council has confirmed.

The school - which caters for around 950 three to 16-year-olds - will provide virtual learning/home learning packs for pupils from Monday, October 19.

It will re-open as normal on Tuesday, November 3.

A spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: Parents/guardians have been advised to remain alert for the main symptoms of coronavirus:

  • A new or continuous cough
  • A high temperature
  • A loss of or change to sense of smell or taste

Those advised to self-isolated should book a coronavirus test if they develop any of these symptoms, even if they are mild.

A test can be booked by phoning 119 or online.
