Entire Neath school told to self-isolate after coronavirus cases affecting pupils

All pupils at a comprehensive school in Neath are self-isolating, following positive coronavirus infections.

Cefn Saeson Comprehensive, which has more than 600 pupils aged 11 - 16, had announced on four separate days over the past week that it had asked pupils in year 7, 8, 9 and 11 to self-isolate following positive tests involving pupils.

The first announcement, for Year 11 pupils, was made on December 1, meaning those pupils will not return until Monday, December 14.

On December 5 the school announced that all year 8 pupils would have to self-isolate, plus those who travelled on the S50 bus on Wednesday, December 2.

The following day it was announced that year 7 would have to self-isolate after a positive diagnosis of a pupil in that year, and the subsequent day it announced the same for year 9.

Neath Port Talbot Council has now confirmed that all year groups at the school, in Cimla, have been asked to self-isolate.

A council spokesman said: ”In accordance with decisions taken with our regional test, trace and protect service, all year groups at Cefn Saeson Comprehensive School have currently been advised to self-isolate.

"Our schools have established tried and tested control measures to reduce the risk of virus transmission."

He added: “There has only been a very limited amount of transmission within schools themselves. It is clear that the risk is higher through the behaviour of people in the wider community.

“We expect year groups to return to school later this week and early next week.”
