Entire Lebanese government to reportedly step down following deadly explosion

The entire government of Lebanon is expected to step down this afternoon following a deadly explosion in the capital last week.

The blast at the Beirut port on Tuesday (August 4) has killed more than 150 people and destroyed large parts of the city.

Three ministers have stepped down following widespread anger at the government, but there have been calls for the whole cabinet to go.

A number of sources are now reporting that Lebanon prime minister Hassan Diab will address the nation tonight and announce his resignation along with the rest of the government.

According to the BBC, authorities said the explosion was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been stored for six years without adequate safety measures.

Protesters stormed government buildings in Beirut on Saturday night to vent their anger at the authorities.

Demonstrators clashed with security forces, who responded by using tear gas and rubber bullets.

One police officer was killed and dozens of people are believed to have been injured in the confrontations.

Yesterday, the Lebanese army called off the rescue phase of the search operation saying that no survivors could be found in the wreckage.

One British aid worker said the impact of the explosion could be seen six miles from the epicentre of the blast.
