Entire Edinburgh Pentlands campsite abandoned with ditched tents and strewn rubbish

The Edinburgh Pentlands have continued to see visitors litter the local beauty spot in rubbish, as bottles, campsites and more are left behind.

Earlier this summer, local police announced they would be carrying out frequent patrols of the area to prevent antisocial behaviour.

However, the move has seemed not to deter some visitors from continuing to cover the area in junk, with some leaving almost everything from their trip.

Images taken this week at White Hill showed a charred out area where a campfire appeared to have been set up, alongside numerous bottles and cans that had been ditched.

Similar scenes were spotted earlier this month, after brazen campers abandoned a tent filled with rubbish and even and human waste - with 'happy camping - free tent must get rid of rubbish' written on the side.

Since the beginning of lockdown, the area has seen a huge influx of people visiting the beauty spot for picnics, walks and also overnight stays.

In the last year, regional park rangers have become increasingly frustrated at the lack of respect for the area, as police hope to curb the issue over the course of the summer.

‘Operation Boxy’ has seen patrols focus on the ‘Edinburgh side of the hills,’ centering on Bonaly Country Park and the Harlaw, Torduff, Clubbiedean and Threipmuir reservoirs from July 5.

A statement at the time from police read: “This Operation involves partnership working between Police Scotland, the Pentland Hills Regional Park team, Scottish Water and the Fire & Rescue Service, amongst others.

“The purpose of the Operation is to combat anti-social behaviour and encourage responsible access and use of the Pentland Hills, including the reservoirs.

“There will be daily patrols during this time where Police Officers and PHRP Officers will engage with members of the public with the purpose of education and prevention."
