Entire carriageway of M1 near Notts will be closed all weekend - here's why

Motorists hoping to take advantage of lockdown being eased this weekend are being warned part of the M1 in the East Midlands will be closed until Monday.

A closure is in place on the southbound carriageway of the road from the junctions of Castle Donington and East Midlands Airport to Shepshed, Leicestershire Live reports.

A spokesperson for Highways East Midlands said: "We will be carrying out essential renewal works to the waterproofing system across West Meadow viaduct and Diseworth Long Whatton Bridge, located between junction 23a and junction 23 on the M1 southbound carriageway.

"During our work, we will plane off the existing carriageway surface, remove and replace the existing waterproofing system and resurface the carriageway.

"Once completed, our works will prevent water leaking onto the bridge decks, which in turn will protect the structures."

The closure started at 10pm yesterday, May 15, and will continue until 6am on Monday, May 18.

Diversion routes are in place.
