Entering contract year, Justin Simmons hopes to stay with Broncos

Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons is entering the fourth and final season of his four-year rookie contract. When the 2019 season wraps up, he will have earned a total of $4,710,139, according to Spotrac.com.

Although he hasn’t earned any Pro Bowl nods or All-Star honors, Simmons is still set to earn much more on his next contract. He’d like to remain with the team beyond the 2019 season but Simmons knows it’s not only up to him.

“Obviously, when it’s all said and done, if I had a choice, I would stay here,” Simmons said after practice Thursday. “Not even a question looking elsewhere or anything like that. Denver has been home to me for the last three years, gave me a shot to play professional ball. I’m forever thankful for this organization giving me a spot.

“On a personal level, I thought last year was OK and I’m not a mediocre guy. So, I want to make sure that regardless of the situation that I was put in, I know what I can do and I know what I can excel at. I’m excited for this year just to be able to bounce back, selfishly, and the also just get back to winning and going to the postseason and obviously those are big goals for us. That’s way down the road, but super excited for that.”

Simmons, 25, was selected by Denver in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Boston College. After serving as a rotational player as a rookie, Simmons has been a regular starter over the last two years.

Through three years in the NFL, Simmons has totaled 195 tackles, two sacks and seven interceptions. He’ll hope to have a career year in 2019 right before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
