Enquiries ongoing after fire destroys football pitches named after Celtic legend

Enquiries are continuing this week after the wilful fireraising of a synthetic football pitch in Hamilton.

South Lanarkshire Council, who operate the facility, say the blaze caused damage to six square metres of one of the artificial grass parks at the Jock Stein Centre on Hillhouse Road.

The incident happened just before 9.30pm on Sunday, April 25, when a seven- a-side football goal was also set alight.

It is not yet known the value of destruction caused, but repairs are expected to take place soon.

The Jock Stein pitches are used daily by hundreds of youngsters and indeed dozens of youth football teams across South Lanarkshire for training facilities and games.

The pitch at Jock Stein can be used in two ways – either for full-size, 11-a-side games, or broken down into three areas for 7-a-side games and training facillities.

South Lanarkshire Council say that two of the three areas are still available for 7-a-side so these lets will continue as normal.

However, 11-a-side lets are cancelled until further notice.

David Booth, of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, told Lanarkshire Live : "A group set fire to six square meters of the pitch surface along with one of the seven-a-side goals on Sunday, April 25.

"Police Scotland have visited the site and reviewed the CCTV footage and are now looking into the matter.

"The pitch has been surveyed to determine the extent of the damage caused and we will carry out repairs as soon as possible."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said they were alerted of reports of grass on fire in at the facility around 9.27pm on April 25, with one appliance sent to the scene to extinguish the fire and make the area safe.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said enquiries were "ongoing" into the wilful fireraising.
