'Enough is enough': Police believe high speed was a factor in 79th fatal crash on SA roads

Police officers investigate the scene of the crash at Renown Park in Adelaide.

Police believe high speed is the likely cause of a fatal car crash in Adelaide's north this morning.

A 23-year-old man from Kilburn died when his car hit a tree on Torrens Road at Renown Park, in Adelaide's inner-north, just before 11:00am.

SAPOL Superintendent Bob Gray said it was another example of a preventable death on South Australian roads this year.

"Unfortunately, that's the 79th time that members of SA Police have had to attend an address and break devastating and life-shattering news to loved ones," he said.

"When are people going to start taking this road safety messaging seriously?

"I've said it before and I'll say it again; enough is enough. People have to take responsibility on our roads.

"These aren't accidents, every one of these was avoidable."

Police believe 'speed played a factor'

Superintendent Gray said early indications were that speed had played a role in the crash, and police would also investigate whether the man was hoon driving in the area prior to the crash.

"I can tell you that early indications, and it is an early investigation, are that speed played a factor," he said.

"Which is extremely concerning and disappointing given we attribute 14 fatalities of our 79 this year to excessive speed.

"That is a conscious decision somebody has made on each occasion to get behind the wheel and drive inappropriately."

He said there was no indication yet that a second vehicle was involved, but police would continue its investigation.

"Early indications are that there's no other vehicle involved," he said.

Police said Major Crash officers would investigate the circumstances of the crash and the 23-year-old was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The man's death takes South Australia's road toll to 79, compared to 49 at this time last year.

Torrens Road remains closed to all traffic between Harrison and South Roads.
