'Enormous waste': Bristol M&S store unable to donate food after fridge problem

An 'isolated refrigerator issue' at M&S Food Hall in Eastville meant the store could not donate wasted food to charity.

M&S's current food waste policy is to donate unused food to charities and community groups on a daily basis.

But after a problem with the Eastgate store's fridge this morning (March 6), the wasted food was bound for the bin.

Claire Edwards, from Fishponds, who was at the store this morning, said it was 'an enormous waste'

She told Bristol Live: "I went into the M&S Eastgate Food Hall this morning and all the fridges were down and broken.

"I enquired about what will happen to the food waste to one of the staff members and they said it would be thrown away out in the bin.

"They told me that this is the current M&S policy for food that is unsafe to eat."

She added: "This is an enormous waste and I've rang M&S to see what can be done about it.

What M&S have said

M&S have since been in contact with Bristol Live to confirm why they were given no choice but to throw the food into the waste.

A spokesperson for M&S said: “We work hard to ensure that surplus food from our stores is donated to charities and community groups on a daily basis.

"On this occasion, there was an isolated refrigeration issue that happened overnight at our Eastgate store and the food unfortunately wasn’t safe to eat and therefore couldn’t be donated.”
