Enormous 'rival Disneyland' UK theme park with one of Europe's fastest rollercoasters takes step closer to reality

Proposals to build a UK theme park that would be the biggest to launch in Europe since Disneyland Paris are gathering pace.

The £2.5 billion scheme will offer one of the continent's fastest rollercoasters, reaching speeds of over 70mph, forming part of a huge 'world' dedicated to dinosaurs.

It also encompasses a hotel complex, a convention centre, a water park and space for a second theme park to open after the first one.

In January the plans were accepted for full examination by the Government - and now the project has entered the pre-procurement phase, meaning potential suppliers are being asked to register their interest, Kent Live reports.

The theme park will be known as the London Resort and is to be built in Swanscombe near Dartford.

It is thought that 48,000 jobs will be created or supported by the London Resort by 2038.

Its superfast rollercoaster is to be called Quetzalcoatlus after a prehistoric creature, and is intended to recreate the animal's typical flight path by staying low to the ground, zipping across treetops, skimming water and bursting through rocky canyons.

The developers say the resort presents a huge opportunity for "a wide range of local, regional and national businesses" and the park could generate £50 billion of gross economic activity (GVA) for the UK in its first 25 years.

The London Resort's developers have compared its economic impact to that of Disneyland Paris, which added around €68bn to the French economy in its 25 years since opening.

Independent analysis estimates there would be 6.5m visitors to The London Resort in 2025, growing to 12.5m visitors by 2038.

If theme parks continue to grow at their 10-year growth rate, it could mean The London Resort would rank as the largest theme park in Europe.

Tim Aker, Development Manager for the Kent and Medway Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), said: "The London Resort is a fantastic opportunity for small businesses in the Southeast.

"This is a chance for SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) to be part of the supply chain and take advantage of the economic benefits this project will bring to the region.

"At a time when the country needs investment, this will have positive effects on the local and wider economy.

"We encourage SMEs to register and see what part they can play in this exciting development."
