Enormous plane carves bizarre flight path in skies over Merseyside

People across Merseyside have spotted an unusually large aeroplane in our skies today.

The giant aircraft has been circling above homes and gardens in Merseyside multiple times - causing a stir on social media.

FlightRadar24 says the plane is a Royal Air Force Airbus A400M which was flown from Brize Norton in Oxforshire to Prestwick in Scotland.

During the journey, the aircraft can be seen circling across the Wirral and Liverpool three times before carrying on north.

However, today's (May 28) flight had nothing to do with coronavirus.

Posting details of the operation, RAF Brize Norton wrote on Facebook: "This morning, our A400M Atlas aircraft will be operating in the vicinity of Prestwick and Liverpool, whilst engaged in essential training.

"These are necessary, routine, flights and not connected with RAF support to the UK's fight against coronavirus.

An RAF Spokesperson confirmed to the ECHO: "A RAF A400M Atlas from RAF Brize Norton was conducting routine training in the North West this morning, this included approaches at both at Prestwick and Liverpool."

What is an Atlas A400M?

According to the RAF, the Atlas provides tactical airlift and strategic oversize lift capabilities.

It has the ability to carry a 37-tonne payload over 2000nm to established and remote civilian and military airfields, and short unprepared or semi-prepared strips.

It is operated by two pilots and a weapons system operator.
