Enormous C-17 military plane makes surprise appearance over Edinburgh - did you spot it?

A huge military airplane was spotted in the sky over Edinburgh yesterday (10 September) as RAF pilots took advantage of the quiet airspace.

The air force said they were undertaking "essential training" in the skies over Edinburgh, Leuchars and St Andrews in Fife.

The huge aeroplane was seen and heard taking off from Edinburgh yesterday afternoon.

In a statement on Twitter yesterday, RAF Brize Norton explained why the aircraft might be seen.

"This morning/afternoon, our C-17 Globemaster aircraft is expected to be operating in the vicinity of Leuchars, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Isle of Man, whilst engaged in essential training", they said.

The Boeing C-17 Globemaster is a transport aircraft that the RAF say can operate close to a potential area of operations for combat, peacekeeping or humanitarian missions worldwide.

And it can carry huge loads, including Chinook helicopters and other military vehicles up to a weight of 100,000lb.

The long-range aeroplane can travel 8,334km at altitudes of 35,000ft. Its design means it can land at airfields with relatively short runways too.

In 2018, a multi million pound deal was agreed to allow the giants to continue flying well into the next decade.
