Enniskillen cafe The Jolly Sandwich keeping customers smiling for generations

Popular cafe The Jolly Sandwich Bar in Enniskillen is known to often have a lengthy queue at the door.

The family run cafe has been a staple in the Co Fermanagh town for years, having originally been set up in Townhall Street then moving up the town to Darling Street in 1999.

Carina Cutler has taken over the running of the cafe from her parents and said it was a job she was just destined to do after the cafe was originally started by her grandparents.

She told MyFermanagh: "Over the years it has been such a family-run business and we would have a lot of our own wee locals and regulars that come in.

“There’s three churches close by so after mass you would have all the ones coming in for their coffee and they would meet up for their chats and everything.

“It’s nice because you get to know all the faces that come in every day.

“It’s been very busy all the time since we reopened after the pandemic. We opened at the start of the year for takeaway only and they flew out for us considering the time of year.

“There’s just a queue all the time now, we need to be careful because we can only have so many in the shop at one time, so you have to manage it that way.

“It can be difficult because we’re quite small and you’re trying not to let it get congested but there’s just a constant queue of people.

“There are food tours which have started now in Enniskillen and it’s great for getting people in as well.”

“People are so aware of their food now and everyone loves food because maybe during the pandemic it was all that we had."

Carina added The Jolly Sandwich is particularly known for its speciality scones as well as their sandwiches.

Everything is made in house and has come from family recipes dating back decades.

She said: “In the morning time the most popular would definitely be the raspberry and white chocolate scones.

“For lunchtime we do a turkey and gammon sandwich with stuffing and cranberry sauce and then we have a huge sweet selection and everything is prepared in here."

But Carina was giving little away when asked about the secret ingredients in the recipes that have been passed through generations.

She added: “I’ve been in the business since I was maybe around 11 or 12, then I went to university, and on a year out I spent some time with Nevin Maguire.

“I left university and came straight back and became self taught.

“My granny is a great baker and my mum and my aunt as well, so the baking genes have really been in our family.

“Some people have approached us about maybe doing a cookery book but I think it maybe best to keep our recipes close to our hearts.”
