Iconsiam invites everyone to celebrate the traditional Loy Krathong festival during the "Iconsiam A Magical Loy Krathong Upon The Chao Phraya River" at its River Park on Friday from 4.30pm onwards.
This is an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful tradition and atmosphere of the Loy Krathong festival from five provinces, each of which will portray Thainess in a distinctive way.
They include the "Yi Peng Lantern Festival" in Chiang Mai where floating lanterns made from translucent paper in various shapes are released into the night sky; and the spectacular "Sukhothai Loy Krathong and Candle Festival" featuring intricately hand-crafted lanterns that are used to worship Lord Buddha's footprint and King Ramkhamhaeng the Great.
Then, witness "Loy Krathong Sai: Floating 1,000 Lanterns", a unique celebration in Tak province reputed for its unique krathong baskets that are made of coconut shells filled with wax threads made from dried coconut soaked with oil.
Called "Somma Nam Kuen Pheng Seng Prateep", this is Roi Et's remarkable festival where people make krathong from banana leaves and decorate them with ears of jasmine rice, one of the province's outstanding products.
Visitors will also learn about the one-of-a-kind banana leaf-sheath krathong used in the "Loy Krathong Gap Gluay Muang Mae Klong" in Samut Songkhram. The leaf sheaths are peeled from the banana stalk and each side is carved with herringbone pattern. Put into the centre of each krathong is an incense stick soaked with dammar oil.
At Sooksiam on the ground floor, meanwhile, the "Wan Pen Yen Jai Tiew Thai See Pak" fair will be held in both temple fair and floating market styles, from tomorrow to Nov 28.
It will replicate the atmosphere of the Amphawa community in Samut Songkhram and bring Thai traditional performances as well as krathong making workshops. Also available will be outstanding products and local foods from the regions.
Many riverside restaurants at Iconsiam that offer the best stunning view of the Chao Phraya River will also offer special deals during this festival.
