Enjoy it while you can! London revels in the final flourish of our two-day heatwave

Londoners flocked to outdoor spaces today to enjoy the last day of the mini heatwave.

Yesterday was officially the hottest March day in 53 years, with 24.5C recorded at Kew Gardens.

Forecasters said today could beat that record — and Met Office forecaster Alex Burkhill said it was a “possibility” temperatures could surpass the March record of 25.6C set in 1968 at Mepal in Cambridgeshire.

But temperatures are set to fall for the rest of the week, with tomorrow predicted to see highs of only 15C in London. By Good Friday, that will dip to 12C and then 10C on Saturday and 13C on Sunday before dropping to 9C on Monday.

Ministers urged Londoners to be cautious when it came to enjoying the sun and their new-found freedoms. Groups of up to six, or two households, are able to socialise in parks and gardens, and outdoor sports facilities have reopened.

There was also confusion about what pandemic restrictions remain in place after some measures were lifted on Monday. The Government dropped the “stay local” advice and confirmed there is now no cap on the distance you can travel.

However, holiday bosses in areas such as Cornwall have urged people to stay away until overnight stays in self-catering accommodation are allowed until April 12.

Sadiq Khan today said he hoped “staycations” resulting from the ban on foreign holidays would encourage Londoners to fall back in love with the capital and boost its crippled economy.
