'Enjoy Christmas... if Boris Johnson loses his Covid gamble we're facing bleak New Year'

Last Christmas was a bit of a nightmare.

Plans were cancelled, families split apart, and lockdown rules took all the shine off what should be the most wonderful time of the year.

This year, we were promised it would all be different. But it’s shaping up to be the same again.

Case numbers are ticking up. We’ve already seen Plan B introduced and the rumours are growing that Plan C and even Plan D are on the way.

Last Christmas nobody enjoyed what was going on. It was tough but we managed.

We understood it was an unprecedented time. But this time the Government had time to prepare and it’s becoming more and more evident they should have done better.

Boris Johnson does not want to ruin Christmas again, of course, but it’s clear that decision is more to do with saving his political skin than looking after the country.

The news from the hospitals is not good. NHS staff and civil servants are preparing for the worst, as beds fill up and the system starts to creak.

The price of the PM’s desperate gamble is going to become clear in the New Year. And we’ll all have to pay it.

Expect some tough measures. In the worst case, another lockdown but at the very least, the social distancing rules are on their way back.

The implications for the economy, small businesses and the country in general are terrifying. But thanks to the ambition of this Prime Minister and his willingness to ignore the science, that’s where we are headed.

So, whatever form it takes, make sure you enjoy Christmas.

It’s going to be a long winter…

Fight like a tiger

We have fought against trophy hunting for years now – and the end could be in sight.

Ministers have agreed tough new laws against imports of ‘souvenir’ body parts, which campaigners say would be strongest in the world.

The Government is dragging its feet with an exact date and every day of delay is a day too many.

But we will keep the pressure on until these precious animals have our full protection.
