Enhanced Brexit guidance now available for seafood businesses as EU departure date looms

Brexit preparation guidance has been enhanced by Seafish, the Grimsby-headquartered public body that supports the £10 billion UK seafood industry.

The organisation’s dedicated Brexit hub has been updated on the website, with practical actions businesses should now take to continue smooth trading in the new year.

It is made relevant to the industry sector they work in, be it import, export, process and distribute or catch and farm.

Fiona Wright, head of regulatory affairs at Seafish, said: “This is a complex issue and there is a world of information out there. In putting this improved guidance together we’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for seafood businesses to know what actions they need to take now.

“Businesses may well have heard much of this before but the key thing to note is that many of these requirements will not change, whether a deal is reached with the EU or not.

“We are also working directly with many businesses with complex cases, in particular through our importers and exporters forums. Specifics can make cases complicated very quickly and we’re happy to speak directly to UK seafood businesses to help them resolve any issues they are experiencing.”

Details will continue to be reviewed and updated in the coming weeks, and Seafish is also developing guidance on moving goods under the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Preparing for new customs procedures has been flagged as a particular issue for many seafood businesses, and a a webinar focusing on this topic has been set for Monday, November 30, from 1pm to 2pm. Speakers from the new Trader Support Service and the Institute of Export & International Trade will present.

Grimsby is seen as the gateway to the UK consumer, and confidence in supply and ability to prosper post-Brexit has been underlined by both Conservative MPs who serve the borough of North East Lincolnshire.

One issue highlighted had been border control posts, with extensive plans put forward by Associated British Ports for entry points, which are awaiting government sign-off.  Inspections have been given a six month grace period to July 1, enabling facilities to be brought forward.
