English town where Covid rates have quadrupled in a week - full list of hotspots

Coronavirus infection rates have quadrupled in one English town in a week.

It comes as the Government advised Brits to avoid travelling in and out of areas affected by outbreaks of the Indian Covid variant.

New figures show the Lancashire district of Rossendale is quickly becoming one of the UK's worst coronavirus hotspots.

In the seven days up to May 21, the borough recorded 81 new cases - a sharp rise from the 20 infections of the previous week.

It is the equivalent of 113.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is more than quadruple the rate recorded over the previous seven day period.

The latest figures show Bolton suffered by far the most infections and has the highest infection rate in England after recording 1,300 new cases, compared with 865 the week before.

Blackburn with Darwen has the second highest infection rate with 301.9 cases, followed by Bedford with 193.9 and then Rossendale.

Kirklees is fifth on the list with a rate of 106.6 cases per 100,000 people after the number of new infections soared from 310 to 469.

The figures have been released as fears grow over the rising number of cases of the Indian variant.

A temporary vaccination centre was set up in Bolton in a bid to boost immunity in the town (PA)

The Government is advising against all but essential travel in and out of eight English areas worst affected by the new strain, although it failed to tell local leaders.

It covers several areas of the UK where Indian variant is believed to be spreading fastest - Bedford, Blackburn and Darwen, Bolton, Burnley, Kirklees, Leicester, Hounslow, and North Tyneside.

The information was posted in an online update at Gov.uk last week (May 21) but it does not appear to have been accompanied by an official announcement.

This reportedly sparked confusion among local leaders in Bolton who claimed they were not told about the guidance.

Bolton is currently the UK's worst Covid hotspot (PA)
