English tourists could face 14 day quarantine if they visit Scotland

As the lockdown eases many people will be heading off for a break in the UK, but English tourists could find a problem at the border with Scotland.

Scotland is reportedly planning to bring in two week quarantine measures if coronavirus cases flare up in England.

Sources within the Scottish government are said to believe that their work to eradicate the virus could be undone if they allow English tourists in.

Currently anyone entering Scotland from abroad has to go into quarantine for 14 days or face a £480 fine.

But now the Sunday Times reports that the same measures might apply to English tourists if cases rise.

However these restrictions might only apply to cities in England where cases of Covid-19 are particularly high.

The Scottish government told the newspaper: “To allow us to move out of lockdown, it is critical that we keep the transmission of the virus as low as possible, and that includes transmission from high to low-risk areas.

“Scotland has in place enhanced surveillance to identify those risks and has long-established powers, enhanced by recent coronavirus legislation, to manage them.

“We are having to take unprecedented steps to deal with the challenges that the pandemic brings.

"As we hopefully suppress the virus further, we will continue to consider any measures that might be necessary to protect against the risk of imported cases of the virus.”
