English football chiefs to face MPs questions over EFL rescue package and Project Big Picture

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters , EFL chairman Rick Parry and FA chair Greg Clarke have all been called to appear in front of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee.

The trio will face questions next week on the lack of an agreement over a critical bailout deal for cash-strapped EFL clubs amid the financial hardships caused by Covid-19, the current state of negotiations on that front and the recent controversial ‘Project Big Picture’ proposal, which was comprehensively voted down by Premier League clubs.

“Many of our football clubs are already facing a precarious future yet they are being put at further risk because the football authorities who should be showing real leadership have reached a place of stalemate," said DCMS Committee chair Julian Knight MP.

Mr Knight added: “The government has made it clear that it won’t step in. A deal must be reached before it’s too late, the loss of any club will leave a gaping hole in its community.

“We’re calling in football chiefs next week to put their case in public in an attempt to break the deadlock between the Premier League and EFL, it cannot go on.”

A previous offer from the Premier League to clubs in Leagues One and Two was worth £50million in loans and grants, but was rejected after leaving out the Championship.

Standard Sport understands that the most recent offer - expected to be discussed at an EFL board meeting on Thursday - provided the same funds for those third and fourth-tier clubs but also pledges a guarantee that no Championship club will be allowed to go out of business during the coronavirus crisis.

The EFL has maintained that its clubs need £250m to survive amid the ongoing pandemic, with fans having been absent from stadia since March and looking unlikely to return anytime soon with England now entering a second, month-long national lockdown.
