English cricketer faces court over Paralympic assault

A 22-year-old English county cricketer has appeared in an Adelaide court charged with assaulting Paralympic gold medal cyclist Kial Stewart.

Paul Kevin Riley flew from England to stand trial over the alleged assault outside the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) headquarters in Adelaide in March last year.

Riley and his friend, 31-year-old Nathan Crack, were allegedly involved in an altercation at the Ramsgate Hotel with a group of cyclists including former world junior champion Stewart.

The Crown alleges Riley and Crack waited for the cyclists outside the Del Monte AIS headquarters at Henley Beach, where Riley was staying for a cricket camp.

It is alleged there was another altercation, during which Riley knocked out Mr Stewart with a punch to the face.

The court heard Crack headbutted Olympic gold medallist Ryan Bayley, before stomping on Mr Stewart's head as he lay on the ground.

Mr Riley was charged with causing grievous bodily harm, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Yesterday, Crack pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Stewart and assaulting Mr Bayley.

Crack will be sentenced at a later date.

Update: On October 22, 2004, Mr Riley was acquitted by the trial judge on the charge of causing grievous bodily harm, but found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Editor's note (25/1/18): The headline of this story has been amended after it incorrectly stated Mr Riley had pleaded guilty to the charges. The story has been updated to include the outcome of the court case.
