English Championship 'sets restart date' as Leeds United look to complete Premier League return

English Championship clubs are reportedly hoping to resume the season on June 6.

The season was called to a halt on March 13 with nine rounds of fixtures still to play.

Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United were seven points clear of third-placed Fulham and looking to make their long awaited return to the Premier League.

The Scottish lower leagues have already been declared over on a points-per-game basis, with Partick Thistle and Stranraer relegated as a result.

And the same call could be made on the Premiership, crowning Celtic champions for the ninth season in a row.

Across the border though they're keen to get playing again, with the Premier League unveiling its 'project restart'.

According to ESPN though it's the Championship that could return first, with clubs hoping to be back on the pitch by June 6.

Leagues One and Two are expected to end their seasons and focus on completing the play-offs.

But the aim is to play all 108 remaining Championship games to a conclusion, plus the end of season play-offs.

Matches will have to be behind closed doors due to social distancing measures, and the first weekend in June may be seen by many as optimistic.

Coronavirus cases and deaths in the UK are at a higher daily level than Italy, the first country in Europe to be devastated by the pandemic, and Serie A will not restart until the following weekend.
