Englewood man gets 66 years in prison for fatally shooting brother

April 25--An Englewood man was sentenced to 66 years in prison for fatally shooting his brother with a shotgun for yelling at him to be quiet, according to prosecutors and court records.

Larry Peters, 66, was sentenced Friday by Cook County Criminal Court Judge Thaddeus Wilson for the killing of his younger brother, Ronald Peters, 50, on Jan. 25, 2013, at the building where they both lived in the 5800 block of South Shields Avenue. In March, a jury convicted Larry Peters of murder, according to Cook County state's attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton and court records.

At the time of the killing, Larry Peters lived upstairs from Ronald Peters, and the victim's daughter later told investigators that her father asked his brother to be quiet. Larry Peters then went downstairs with a shotgun, prosecutors said at the time of the killing.

Later, thinking the situation had calmed, Ronald Peters let his brother enter his apartment, and Larry Peters shot him twice, according to prosecutors. Ronald Peters fled to the porch, then crawled to the street with blood flowing from his side, prosecutors said.

Larry Peters followed his brother outside and shot him a third time as he crawled in the middle of the street, prosecutors said.

Ronald Peters was unarmed, prosecutors said, and witnesses heard him say nothing threatening to his older brother.

After the shooting, Larry Peters left the shotgun in the yard and walked away, prosecutors said. Minutes later, Larry Peters approached an officer and said, "I just shot my brother, and I want to turn myself in," according to a police report.
