England World Cup quarter-final win over Sweden sparked record alcohol poisoning cases in UK hospitals

Drunken celebrations following England's World Cup quarter-final win led to a record number of people going to hospital with alcohol poisoning.

NHS England said 711 people turned up in hospital on July 7, the day England beat Sweden to reach the World Cup semi-final for the first time since 1990.

It compares to the average 386 alcohol poisoning cases medics deal with on a normal Saturday.

A spokesman said it could be assumed the vast majority of cases on July 7 could be related to revellers thinking it was coming home.

But Dr Clifford Mann, NHS England's clinical lead for accident and emergency, didn't see the funny side as workers gear up for another busy day: New Year's Eve.

He said: "As a doctor who works in emergency care, I've seen first-hand how drunk and sometimes aggressive people can put extra stress and pressure on paramedics, nurses and other hospital staff trying to do their job.

"As we prepare to see in the new year, I would urge everyone to have a great time but not to overdo it - the NHS is not the National Hangover Service."
