England Women out to beat the best AGAIN and be World Cup 2019 winners

The countdown has begun to what could be the biggest year in the history of women’s football in England.

The Lionesses start the build-up to this summer’s World Cup with a friendly against Canada on Friday, knowing the tournament in France is just two months away.

And there is a genuine belief within Phil Neville’s squad that they have the experience, quality and support to win the trophy and make themselves the best team in the world. But England striker Ellen White also insists it could be a huge moment for the women’s game because they can make themselves household names and heroes in front of a huge TV audience.

Birmingham striker White, 29, said: “We want to be No.1 in the world, no doubt about that. Winning the SheBelieves tournament against the likes of Brazil, USA and Japan gave us a lot of confidence.

“We know this will be the biggest women’s World Cup that’s ever happened.”

England went close four years ago in Canada, losing a semi-final to Japan, and yet White has a constant reminder at home which will spur her on to do better this time, especially as they start the tournament by facing Scotland in the group opener.

“We are super-passionate and that’s what captured the imagination back at home last time,” said White.

“We lost in the semi final, which was so disappointing, but we picked ourselves back up, won the third place play-off and that bronze medal sits on my door at home and I see it every day when I get up. But I want a gold one! I literally have it on my door, so it’s the first thing I see every day and my husband always says, ‘Can we change that, please? It’s all I see!’

“That’s the only thing I have in my house. My mum and dad have other things, but I want more.

“A lot of the squad who were in Canada are in the squad at the moment and we can definitely take those experiences and use the momentum going into this World Cup.”

White also believes that ex-England defender Neville has brought an extra edge to the squad and their preparations this time.

She added: “I think his standards have been the thing that has stood out for me. Not just on the pitch, but off the pitch when it comes to showing humility.

“We travel around a lot and having humility with whoever you speak to is really important.”
