England vs West Indies weather: Day four a potential washout as hosts close in on victory

England stepped up their bid for a series-clinching win over the West Indies on Sunday with the weather set to halt their progress on day four.

Knowing Monday's play could be washed out completely, England swiftly built on their first innings lead before Joe Root, who scored an unbeaten 68 off 56 balls, declared late on day three with the hosts on 226-2, setting the Windies 399 to win the series.

Rory Burns and Dom Sibley had earlier put on 114 for the first wicket - the first century stand by English openers on home soil since Sir Alastair Cook and Alex Hales in 2016.

Stuart Broad took two late wickets as England made early inroads before stumps, reducing the West Indies to 10 for two in the evening session as the tourists' hopes of a successful chase took a huge blow.

Broad had earlier finished off their first innings with a burst of four for 14 and is now tantalisingly poised on 499 career scalps.

Burns said: “You’ll have to ask the skipper a little bit more about [the declaration]. I don’t think [Monday's weather] looks that great. We accelerated a little bit there and managed to get a couple of poles tonight, so we’re eight wickets away.”
