No mistake: Georgia Stanway - (Getty Images)

Euro 2025 LIVE!

England sailed into the last eight of Euro 2025 with a 6-1 hammering of Wales in their final Group D game. Sarina Wiegman’s side were perilously close to an embarrassing early exit before matchday two after their opening day defeat to France, but they rediscovered their winning touch to decimate both the Netherlands and now Wales to reach the quarter-finals.

Georgia Stanway opened the scoring from the spot, before Ella Toone doubled the Lionesses’ tally. Lauren Hemp’s towering back-post header made it three, before Alessia Russo scored her first of this summer’s tournament.

Beth Mead stepped off the bench to rifle in number five, before Jess Fishlock picked out Hannah Cain with a gorgeous pass as Wales netted a consolation. Aggie Beever-Jones added the cherry on top as she headed home in the dying embers, as England’s title defence continues against Sweden in the last eight.

Sam Tabuteau reports

21:59 , Oli Gent

England are here and here to stay. A mighty performance sees them coast into the knockouts, where they'll face Sweden. 6-1 victors over Wales here in St. Gallen. Comfortable doesn't cut it.

Full time

21:54 , Oli Gent

There we have it. A superb victory for the Lionesses, who move into the knockout stages with relative ease.

England 6-1 Wales

21:54 , Oli Gent

90+1 mins: Great save! The ball comes out for Walsh at the edge of the area, and she forces a wonderful stop from Clark on the stretch!

Sam Tabuteau reports

21:52 , Oli Gent

90 mins: Aggie Beever-Jones has had quite the year and now she's an England goalscorer at a major tournament. 10 goals in two games for the Lionesses. Talk about a reaction.

England 6-1 Wales

21:51 , Oli Gent

Goal! 89 mins: Aggie Beever-Jones gets her first at a major tournament, as she heads home! Mead stands it up, and the Chelsea forward adds the cherry on top.

England 5-1 Wales

21:46 , Oli Gent

85 mins: Carrie Jones is replaced by Barton.

England 5-1 Wales

21:42 , Oli Gent

82 mins: A change apiece for either side. Lucy Bronze is taken off for Niamh Charles, while Elise Hughes is on for Ffion Morgan.

Sam Tabuteau reports

21:40 , Oli Gent

80 mins: A nice moment for Wales as they get a goal back. Another big contribution from 38-year-old Jess Fishlock, picking a lovely pass, which Hannah Cain finishes with aplomb.

England 5-1 Wales

21:39 , Oli Gent

Goal! 77 mins: The Welsh have a goal, and what a goal that is! It’s a splendid pass and an even better finish, as Hannah Cain rattles it home past Hampton. Fishlock does well to drive through the heart of England, before feeding Cain with one of the passes of the tournament, and Cain finishes emphatically.

Sam Tabuteau reports

21:37 , Oli Gent

75 mins: England have a fifth. Beth Mead off the bench and on the scoresheet. England are picking and choosing their moments. When they do go forward, Wales don't have an answer.

England 5-0 Wales

21:34 , Oli Gent

Goal! 72 mins: It’s five, and Beth Mead gets one! She shows great feet in the box, sending her marker to the shops with a neat feint before checking back onto her left to drill in number five.

England 4-0 Wales

21:28 , Oli Gent

69 mins: Key goals going in in the other game in Group D, and France are now beating the Netherlands. That therefore puts them - as it stands - as group winners.

England 4-0 Wales

21:27 , Oli Gent

66 mins: A couple of changes for Wales as Rowe is replaced by Ladd, and Holland comes off for Cain.

England 4-0 Wales

21:26 , Oli Gent

65 mins: Given away carelessly by Wales at the back, and Stanway is onto it in a flash. Her options are limited, however, and she goes for the strike from range, but it’s charged down.

England 4-0 Wales

21:21 , Oli Gent

60 mins: The confidence is still flowing as Stanway breaks into the box from midfield and looks to loft it over Clark, but the Welsh keeper does well to get down and smother.

England 4-0 Wales

21:19 , Oli Gent

58 mins: More changes afoot for England as James and Russo are sacrificed, with Chloe Kelly and Aggie Beever-Jones on in their places.

Sam Tabuteau reports

21:16 , Oli Gent

55 mins: England start as they mean to go on, hitting the post through substitute Jess Park. There have been some big wins for some of the pre-tournament favourites so far and England sense they can make a real statement of intent in this second-half.

England 4-0 Wales

21:14 , Oli Gent

52 mins: How has that stayed out! What ball into the box from Walsh as Park leaps to volley, as Clark keeps her out. Russo looks to follow in from the rebound, but she’s just smothered in the nick of time!

England 4-0 Wales

21:12 , Oli Gent

50 mins: England back on the front foot immediately as they look to rub salt in Welsh wounds. They are currently sat top of Group D with France losing at the moment, but they want their goal difference as healthy as possible.

England 4-0 Wales

21:07 , Oli Gent

46 mins: Two subs at the interval, with Hemp and Toone replaced by Jess Park and Beth Mead. We’re back underway.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:52 , Oli Gent

HT: England are marching towards the knockouts. They haven't stepped out of second gear and yet have four goals to show for their efforts. Wales, as they have all tournament, have been bright in periods but ultimately far too naive defensively.

Half time

20:51 , Oli Gent

Wales are looking to finish with a flurry as Hampton is caught out trying to play out, and Fishlock has a pot-shot that dribbles wide.

There’s the interval, and it’s been all England. 4-0 at the break.

England 4-0 Wales

20:47 , Oli Gent

45+1 mins: Five added minutes, as Hemp sends a cross in, and James coming in! Just over with the first-time finish.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:46 , Oli Gent

45 mins: Alessia Russo gets her goal and my does she deserve it. It's a simple finish from the England forward, who takes a touch before slotting into an empty net. Ella Toone combines again with her good friend.

England 4-0 Wales

20:45 , Oli Gent

Goal! 44 mins: It’s four, and Russo gets her first goal of the Euros! England are showing why they are a formidable side as Toone gets another assist after a nice give and go with James. She cuts it back from the byline, and finds Russo, who has time to take a touch and then poke home into the corner.

England 3-0 Wales

20:42 , Oli Gent

41 mins: Close! The ball is fired in by James towards the near post, where Russo is making the move, and Evans does just enough to nick ahead of the striker!

England 3-0 Wales

20:40 , Oli Gent

39 mins: Wales are looking run ragged here. The movement of England’s attacking midfield trident has really done them damage, with Russo pinning the two centre-backs.

England 3-0 Wales

20:35 , Oli Gent

35 mins: Clark is down here, and it’s obviously for Wales to regroup. The players are getting some water on as Wiegman and Wilkinson both talk to their teams, passing on those little bits of detail that they’ll have noticed in this opening half-hour.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:33 , Oli Gent

33 mins: England are rampant, they're having a lot of fun here. Lauren Hemp with the back post header to make it 3-0 and this could get ugly for Wales, if they're not careful.

England 3-0 Wales

20:32 , Oli Gent

Goal! 30 mins: It’s three, and it’s Hemp! Some lovely play down the right as Toone, Bronze, and James combine, before Toone digs out a cross looking for Russo. It comes for Hemp stealing in around the back, and she towers highest to nod home.

England 2-0 Wales

20:28 , Oli Gent

29 mins: Great save! Some nice one-touch football from the Welsh as it breaks for James-Turner to have a pop from the edge of the box, and Hampton has to get down quickly to keep it out!

England 2-0 Wales

20:27 , Oli Gent

27 mins: Greenwood swings a cross in from the left, and James, moving inside off the right, looks to connect with a volley, but it’s over the top.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:25 , Oli Gent

24 mins: Wales have gifted England a route through to the knockouts. Alessia Russo may not have her goal but she's up to four assists in three games. Two starts, two goals for Ella Toone as well. England on easy street.

England 2-0 Wales

20:22 , Oli Gent

Goal! 21 mins: Calamitous defending from Wales, as Ella Toone makes it two. It’s all too easy down the left for England as Hemp wins the knockdown and Roberts performs quite the airshot as she tries to clear ahead of Russo. It breaks for the England striker as Clark looks to smother her, but it ricochets for Toone, who doubles the lead.

England 1-0 Wales

20:21 , Oli Gent

20 mins: That goal is an early settler of England nerves, not that they were showing any. They’re turning the ball over with ease in the middle of the park so far, but Jones makes a burst through the centre circle and feeds Fishlock. The midfielder goes for a speculative effort from range that balloons over.

England 1-0 Wales

20:18 , Oli Gent

17 mins: Holland is down after a collision with Bronze and is receiving treatment for a head injury. She’s ok, and is ready to return to the field.

Sam Tabuteau reports

20:15 , Oli Gent

15 mins: That was the last thing Wales needed. They'd made an encouraging start but a silly foul from Carrie Jones and now it's going to be a real challenge for them. England won't mind one bit.

England 1-0 Wales

20:13 , Oli Gent

Goal! 13 mins: Stanway dusts herself down and makes no mistake from 12 yards. 1-0!

England 0-0 Wales

20:12 , Oli Gent

12 mins: Penalty! VAR rules that Stanway was felled in the area, and England have a spot-kick. Nightmare start for Wales.

England 0-0 Wales

20:11 , Oli Gent

11 mins: There is a VAR check here to see if the foul was in fact in the area! The free kick has been delayed for the referee to hear what the video assistant has to say...

England 0-0 Wales

20:10 , Oli Gent

10 mins: Free kick, England. Stanway shows clever feet to bamboozle Jones, and the midfielder is clipped on the edge of the box. The referee rules that it was outside the area, and Alex Greenwood and Lauren James are both interested in hitting this.

England 0-0 Wales

20:09 , Oli Gent

9 mins: It’s been a bit more of a low-key start than we might have imagined. Wales are looking to contain the Lionesses, as we thought, but England are being a bit more patient in possession rather than gung-ho off the bat.

England 0-0 Wales

20:06 , Oli Gent

6 mins: Well, it’s very clear to see what Wiegman’s instructions to Lauren Hemp were. Run. The winger picks the ball up down the left and looks to burn past Esther Morgan, and she stands up the cross from the byline, but Clark claims.

England 0-0 Wales

20:03 , Oli Gent

3 mins: Bronze has full licence to join the attack, flying down the right as James moves inside. A very attacking mentality from England from the outset.

Kick off

20:00 , Oli Gent

1 min: We’re underway.

The players are out

19:55 , Oli Gent

Time for the national anthems!

Key battles

19:44 , Oli Gent

Where on the pitch might this game be won and lost?

The engine room, for starters, would be the most obvious place to start.

Fishlock and James-Turner will be tasked with picking up Toone when she drifts into the half-spaces and the pockets between the defensive lines, while it will be up to Walsh and Stanway to do similar with Carrie Jones.

Lily Woodham could have her work cut out against Lauren James, who is in fine form after her double against the Netherlands, while on the other side, Lauren Hemp has terrorised her full-backs so far, and has Esther Morgan in her scopes this evening.

Wales all-but out

19:30 , Oli Gent

Wales are on the verge of being knocked out of Euro 2025.

Their 4-1 defeat to France was their second of the summer campaign to leave them bottom of Group D.

Wales need to beat England and reverse a nine-goal swing in goal difference to have any chance of qualifying for the knockouts.

Sam Tabuteau reports

19:15 , Oli Gent

England are unchanged from their 4-0 win over the Netherlands. The Lionesses have never lost to Wales.

In fact, they've never been beaten by a home nation at a major tournament. It’s never that simple, though…

It also goes by the name of Kybunpark.

Standard Sport prediction

18:41 , Oli Gent

This should really be a straightforward victory for the Lionesses, but with it being against the neighbours, it always has the potential to be a banana skin.

Wales put in a better performance against France than they did in their first match against the Netherlands, but they are now coming up against the defending champions, who are back in their groove after a big win over the Dutch.

England to win, 3-0

Wales team news

18:20 , Oli Gent

As for Rhian Wilkinson’s side, Sophie Ingle, the ex-Chelsea midfielder, returned from a year-long hiatus with a knee injury when she stepped off the bench against France.

Olivia Clark, the Leicester goalkeeper, could make a return between the sticks, while Hayley Ladd, the Everton defender, could also make a comeback.

England team news

18:07 , Oli Gent

Could Sarina Wiegman name an unchanged XI from the side that defeated the Netherlands?

Jess Carter looked more assured at centre-back, with Ella Toone coming in at No10 to allow Lauren James to move wide right.

It worked last time, will she try something new this time?

There are no injury worries for the Lionesses.
