England vs Ireland cricket: Ireland post lowest score in Test at Lords as Chris Woakes stars

Relive all the action as Ireland haplessly chased a famous victory over England at Lord's.

Jack Leach's 92 as a nightwatchman appeared to have England on course to right the wrong of Wednesday's 85 all out but yet another middle order collapse had Ireland on the verge of a monumental win in just their third Test match.

Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad were sensational with the ball though to prevent humiliation for the hosts in preparation for the Ashes.

Welcome

Good morning and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of day two at Lord's as England look to battle back from their humiliating morning in the first session.

England were quickly skittled for 82 before lunch as Ireland basked in their moment in the sun, Tim Murtagh playing his way onto the honours board with five wickets.

Rory Burns (5) and Jason Roy (6) have some work to do to convince Joe Root they are the pair that can open in the Ashes series against Australia...which starts in seven days!

Honours board

Tim Murtagh's fantastic 5/13 has earned him a place on the prestigious Lord's honours board.

He's in very fine company there.

"I'm not quite sure what's happened the last two hours to be honest," Murtagh told Sky Sports.

"It's just a dream to perform like that and to have my name up there on the honours board.

"I should know how to bowl on this ground, that was key, to get it up there and let the pitch do a little bit of work."

How they got out

It was a very grim day for the England batsman, relive how each of them fell.

The opening solution

Jack Leach successfully faced six Tim Murtagh deliveries without getting out as he was appointed night-watchman at the end of play. Doubt he'll open in the Ashes, mind...
Olly Stone

There was one glimmer of success in England's play yesterday as Olly Stone played himself right into Ashes contention.

He ended with three wickets and 19 runs, England's second-highest individual scorer.

It was also telling that when the wicket flattened out after the openers had their spell that Joe Root turned to him instead of Chris Woakes...

1.0 England 0/0 Jack Leach 0 Rory Burns 0

Right, the bell has been rung and we're about five minutes away from things getting underway once again, how long can Leach last?

If he can dig in and frustrate those opening bowlers, that could give Jason Roy a nice platform to build on.
1.0 England 2/0 Jack Leach 0 Rory Burns 2

Burns is on strike and Mark Adair opens the bowling.

Coming around the wicket, Adair almost finds an outside edge with his fifth ball.

Burns then tucks the last ball to deep point for a couple as England get off the mark.
1.4 England 2/0 Jack Leach 0 Rory Burns 2

Here's Tim Murtagh on to bowl his first over of the game.

Goodness, he looks up for this again, beginning to find that late nip up of the surface again.
2.0 England 6/0 Jack Leach 4 Rory Burns 2

Oh Jack Leah, what a shot, presuming he meant it. He dissects third slip and gully, it bounces in front of them and it goes for four.
2.1 England 7/0 Jack Leach 4 Rory Burns 2

Oops, Adair gets that a bit wrong and bowls a poor ball down the leg side and England take a bye.

It seems there is a touch of swing for Adair out there as he searches for Leach's outside edge.
3.0 England 9/0 Jack Leach 6 Rory Burns 2

Leach now has the joint-highest single score for an opening English batsman in this Test with a neat touch behind square for a couple of runs.
4.3 England 9/0 Jack Leach 6 Rory Burns 3

Burns takes a single, although both batsman were a little stuck in the middle as Ireland field well at point.
4.5 England 15/0 Jack Leach 11 Rory Burns 2

It's all going here, the ball comes in to the strikers' end, hits the stumps and goes away to the boundary. It's not like there to be overthrows to the boundary on this ground...

Leach, meanwhile, gets himself to 11 and moves about Jason Roy and Burns' combined scores.
6.0 England 15/0 Jack Leach 11 Rory Burns 3

Adair tries some short stuff at Leach, who looks reasonably set out there.
6.0 England 15/0 Jack Leach 11 Rory Burns 3

Is bowling around the wicket the way to go?

6.4 England 15/0 Jack Leach 11 Rory Burns 3

Burns still looks a touch twitchy out there and Ireland have put a man about one yard in front of square, perhaps they're looking for a cut in the air.
7.0 England 15/0 Jack Leach 11 Rory Burns 3

Swing watch

7.1 England 18/0 Jack Leach 13 Rory Burns 3

Leach! Stop that! That's a lovely drive into space in the covers and he gets a couple.
8.0 England 18/0 Jack Leach 13 Rory Burns 3

Adair throws a Yorker Leach's way as Ireland, you suspect, are getting a little frustrated. It squeezes into bat and pads and rolls just past the stumps.
9.0 England 21/0 Jack Leach 13 Rory Burns 6

Ireland are pushing for a wicket as England finally get to grips with playing a forward defence.
