David Willey takes five-wicket haul as England dominate Ireland in ODI series opener

A starring performance from David Willey ensured England took a 1-0 lead in their three-match ODI series against Ireland.

Eoin Morgan won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision swiftly justified as Willey took four wickets in as many overs with the visitors slumping to 28 for five.

Ireland battled back to finish on 172, fittingly with Willey bagging the final wicket for his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs after 14 months away.

England lost Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow to early lbw calls, with James Vince and Tom Banton falling shortly after as a nervous home side lost four wickets for just 78 runs.

A pair of assured performances from the captain Morgan and, in particular, Sam Billings saw England through to the finish, the batsmen finishing on 36 and 67 respectively as the home side won by six wickets.

A 1-0 lead puts England in pole position ahead of Saturday's second match, again at the Ageas Bowl, where they will look to wrap up the series and take the 10 points in their World Cup Super League opener.
