Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted from the penalty spot after the impressive Bukayo Saka had been brought down before a raft of substitutions saw England ease off the gas.
Among the replacements was 17-year-old Jude Bellingham, who became the third youngest player ever to make his England debut after Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney.
Elsewhere in Europe, there was agony for Northern Ireland and ecstasy for Scotland in their European Championship qualifying playoffs.
Northern Ireland were beaten 2-1 a.e.t. in Belfast by Slovakia but Scotland reached next summer’s tournament - where they will be in the same group as England - thanks to a penalty shootout win over Serbia.
