England vs India as it happened: Alastair Cook falls at the last after Virat Kohli's brilliant century

England take on India in the first Test at Edgbaston.

Joe Root's side face the world's best, Virat Kohli's No 1 ranked team, in the most-anticipated Test series of the year. For Kohli's men it's the chance to cement their place as one of the great teams of the last decade after dominating the long form of the game for the last three years. Will that big away win finally come to fruition over the next six weeks?

For Root and his side the series presents the opportunity to build on the thrilling one-day series win over the same opponents last month as they look to return to the top of the game under new chief selector Ed Smith.

We will have all the latest for you from Birmingham.

Live Updates

Jonathan Liew at Edgbaston:

You've got to love a 149, don't you. There's something magical about that number: Pietersen at Headingley, Botham at Headingley, Gilchrist at Hobart, Gilchrist again in the 2007 World Cup final. That innings from Kohli deserves to sit alongside them. For England, though, the operative numbers are 13 - their slender lead - and 24, which is the likely number of balls they'll have to survive tonight.
18:29
WICKET! Cook goes to spin again, after another brilliant delivery from Ashwin which turns on to the top of off stump. And that's the end of the day, England finishing on 9-1 with a lead of 22 runs. See you tomorrow.
18:28
Cook is fending off the spin off Ashwin, just trying to see this out to close without ceding a wicket.
18:19
So Shami begins the second innings, bowling to Cook.
18:06
THEY'VE GOT HIM! Rashid wraps it up as Kohli is looking for the boundary with another chop to the off-side but he is caught by Broad. Fantastic innings by Kohli who goes for 149 to help India to 274 all out - just 13 runs short of England's total.
17:58
Well, he's tried to dab and run and keep the strike but Kohli has accidentally hit it for four and Umesh in on strike as Stokes, who is looking very weary, bowls again.
17:54
Kohli vs Stokes episode 24547: Starts with a four. He's only dealing in boundaries here, for the first three balls anyway. Then it's a single so he's on strike for the next over. And it starts all over again and the world keeps spinning.
17:49
Two more boundaries for India and Kohli is dragging them to England's total. He has more than half of India's runs so far in this Test.
17:42
Kohli is hogging the strike here and then having a good go. England's lead has been cut even further to less than 50 now as Kohli continues on 118 from 199 deliveries.
17:35
Bairstow thinks he's got Kohli here, who is now on 111 not out. He hasn't though. Never even looked close.
17:22
Incidentally, if India had reviewed that Rashid wicket, Sharma would have got a third reprieve as the ball was going down leg. But they didn't and Umesh is at the crease. However, all attention is on Kohli who, at 97 is going for his century. Stokes the name trying to stop him. BUT HE CAN'T! Kohli scores his 22nd Test century and his first in England. He's deserved that.
17:16
WICKET!

Rashid enters the fray and just like that India are nine down! The spin bamboozles Sharma and off he goes! India 217-9 now.
17:08
Kohli is into the 90s now and closing in on his century. This India tail is proving a little harder to shake as the shadows grow longer at Edgbaston this evening. Stokes is bowling now.
16:55
Anderson strikes again! But again it's reviewed!

The ball pitches outside the line of off stump despite there being no nick from the bat and for the second time, Sharma has earned a reprieve from Hawkeye.
16:50
From Jonathan Liew:
Can't help feeling this would be so much better as a product if it was 100 balls long with 15 players on each side. With no LBWs. And Michael McIntyre commentating. And instead of England and India, it was Atlantic Lions versus South Asian Blues. But then that's focus groups for you.
16:49
Kohli is picking off Curran here with a beautifully time clip through mid-wicket for four before a clever cut to find the boundary again. Kohli finishes the over on 84*, with India now past 200 runs for the innings. What did we say about ruing those dropped catches again?
16:35
AND ANOTHER ONE! Or is it?

Anderson picks up the wicket of Sharma for lbw but it has been instantly reviewed! The UltraEdge shows a nick on the inside of the bat before it hit the pads. Not out! As you were.
16:33
Sharma comes to the crease now as the penultimate man in and India resume on 182/8. Incidentally, Malan's record now reads caught two, dropped two.
16:31
Jos Buttler is back onto the field with some significant strapping on his hand after his trip to hospital for an X-ray.

And the good news keeps coming for England as Anderson gets his second wicket! Shami edges behind and is caught by Malan, much to his relief.
16:25
Anderson is on a mission to collect Kohli's wicket here. One ball thumps him on the top of his thigh before he is nearly run-out by Ben Stokes by the next.
