England have ended the year on a high after overcoming Ghana in their final friendly of 2025.
Sarina Wiegman made seven changes from the side that romped to an 8-0 victory over China at Wembley and quickly saw one of those switches pay off as Lucia Kendall fired home inside five minutes to break the deadlock.
The Lionesses were then frustrated by their visitors in the search for a second goal, with the first-half injury to Chloe Kelly not helping their cause.
But just as the game was approaching its climax, a handball on the line from a Ghana defender gave England the perfect opportunity to put the contest to bed in stoppage time - a chance gobbled up by Alessia Russo who converted from the spot.
Off the pitch, ITV presenter Laura Woods collapsed live on air after being ‘taken ill’ with Katie Shanahan replacing her alongside pundits Ian Wright and Anita Asante for the game, though her fiance Adam Collard has since confirmed that she is “ok and with the right people”.

Pre-match thoughts from Sarina Wiegman
18:16 , Mike JonesEngland manager Sarina Wiegman told BBC Radio 5 Live: "We have never played Ghana. We talk a lot about when we play the African countries and of course they have their different styles of play, and different tweaks in how they want to play, but you often see a lot of speed and physicality.
"Ghana also have a clear structure of how they want to play. In moments they want to play a possession game but they also want to be direct. That is what we want to force them to do – not to give them time to play.
"They also have some rotations if they have opportunities so let’s see how that goes. It’s good to have that challenge because we want that going into the next stage.”
Fortress St. Mary's
18:15 , Mike JonesEngland have never conceded in four previous games at St Mary’s Stadium.

“Georgia [Stanway] got a hat-trick and I think it was a great team performance and we were able to show some really good quality. I think we had eight or nine clear chances and we got eight goals.
“I think it’s a really exciting time to play a non-European team and a team that England has never played before.
“For me personally, being at Southampton is quite nice. My family are near from the Isle of Wight and they’ll be coming over.
“It’s nice to get a different calibre of people, fans and like Sarina said, to have 24,000 fans and hopefully a few more tickets sold, it’ll be a really, really good game.”

2025 has been incredible for the Lionesses
17:39 , Mike Jones“It has been an incredible year again with the journey,” Wiegman said when asked to sum up the year for England.
“The season started last year around this time with the team getting prepared for the Euros. I think the camps we had from February towards the Euros was great and I think the tournament itself, I’ve said a couple of times, was an incredible tournament again.
“On the pitch, I still think it was insane how the games developed but off the pitch was really calm and I think I enjoyed it more than I did the other tournaments before. I like now the homecoming too, having these friendlies, connecting with the fans.”

Wiegman on England's injuries
17:32 , Mike Jones“Not everyone is available,” Sarina Wiegman said in an update on the fitness of the squad.
“Unfortunately, Grace Fisk picked up a small injury, so she will not be available.
“There’s always connections with the managers and there’s also always calls before and after camp. I’m very aware about the schedule, so you’ll see some changes and try to manage minutes but also we don’t have that many opportunities to play and to play friendlies.
“After this camp, we only have eight more camps to go until the World Cup. We need to qualify first – I know that. You want to use the time together and the minutes on the pitch as much as possible too.”
Sarina Wiegman defends call not to hand out England debuts in China thrashing
17:25 , Mike JonesSarina Wiegman defended her decision not to give some new faces a chance during England’s 8-0 drubbing of China.

The Lionesses were 3-0 up after just 16 minutes and five ahead at half-time, when Wiegman made three changes, bringing on three more members of her successful Euro 2025 squad in Chloe Kelly, Jess Park and Lotte Wubben-Moy.

Sarina Wiegman defends call not to hand out England debuts in China thrashing
Why didn't Wiegman hand out debuts versus China?
17:18 , Mike Jones“We take every game seriously,” said Sarina Wiegman after the friendly win against China.
The head coach was questioned about her starting line-up and why she didn’t give debuts to youngsters Freya Godfrey and Anouk Denton.
Wiegman added: “When we sub three players at half-time, I think that’s enough. We have a squad of 25 and there’s many players that are really knocking on the door. Everyone wants to play.
“Some players are just coming into the squad and they’re really finding their feet. Other players have played for us and are doing a really good job and they’re competing for starting positions. That’s how I look at the game.”

Stanway on hammering China
17:11 , Mike JonesGeorgia Stanway scored a hat-trick against China as England won 8-0 and after the game she revealed how pleased she was with the performance.
"We were very good. It's nice to see lots of different goalscorers and people getting minutes and come away with a good win,” she told ITV.
"I thought we put together some really good goals. I am happy to get them two.
"It's the perfect time and opportunity to give the girls exposure to international level. It is good to see them get the minutes."

Sarina Wiegman experimenting with England line-up
17:04 , Mike JonesThe Lionesses head coach, Sarina Wiegman, said she would use the final two friendlies this year to ‘experiement’ with her starting XI.
However, England’s 8-0 over China saw a a lot of familiar and experienced names start the match.
“We want to experiment a little bit and see players, try out things and that's exactly what we are doing,” Wiegman said before the China fixture.
Will that experimenting start tonight instead?

Anna Moorhouse made her debut between the sticks against China, with both first-choice keeper Hannah Hampton and Khiara Keating absent with injury.
