Jack Grealish turns the game for England - player ratings from Wembley

England are celebrating a mammoth European Championship victory against Germany after Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane fired Gareth Southgate's men into the quarter-finals.

For many onlookers facing Die Mannschaft brought up painful memories, from the 1970 World Cup to the ghost goal in 2010 as well as the Italia 90 and Euro 96 semi-final shootout heartbreaks.

But England's players showed few signs of anxiety, nerves or baggage in the build-up or at Wembley, heeding boss Southgate's advice to write their own history as Sterling and Kane struck in a famous 2-0 round-of-16 win.

The din inside the national stadium belied the 40,000-or-so in attendance and the reward for just their second ever Euros knockout win is a quarter-final clash against Sweden or Ukraine in Rome this Saturday.

England will head to Italy on the crest of a wave after digging deep on a nervy evening in front of a partisan home crowd, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford producing some important saves before Sterling broke the deadlock in the second half.

The 26-year-old turned in Luke Shaw's driven cross home to send supporters wild, but he was soon panicking after his loose ball led Thomas Muller to race through.

But the Germany veteran - who scored twice against England in their 2010 World Cup exit - inexplicably dragged wide and Kane opened his account for the tournament by directing home fan favourite Jack Grealish's cross.

Here's how Lee Ryder rated the England players.

Jordan Pickford 8

Two massive, massive saves to deny Werner and Havertz. Alive and alert and England needed him to be.

Kyle Walker 7

A steady shift and used experience as the game wore on.

Harry Maguire 8

Wasteful with first half headers in front of goal in the first half. Some key moments second half to win UEFA's star of the match.

John Stones 8

Kept a world class forward line quiet. Some ice cool defending.

Kieran Trippier 8

England's best attacker in the first half with some great runs and balls into the box. Played through pain at the end.

Kalvin Phillips 8

Has been a revelation in this tournament. Covered every blade of grass! And negotiated booking.

Declan Rice 8

Recovered well from horror moment early on. Ran himself in the ground, Made up for early foul with key block.

Luke Shaw 8

Quietly gets on with his game. Calm and calculated assist in the eye of a storm to set up the win and Sterling goal.

Bukayo Saka 8

Works so hard. Should definitely start in Rome if fit.

Harry Kane 7

Played ridiculously deep in first half. Again the service was poor. But showed why Southgate kept him on the pitch. Form is temporary class is permanent. Picked up form at a great time.

Raheem Sterling 8

Always a threat on the ball. Tidy finish from Shaw's cross.

Subs

Jack Grealish 8 (for Saka 69)

Emerged from the bench to wrestle control of the game. Had a big hand in opener and then cool assist for Kane. Will be some people's man of the match. Gets my vote for simply turning the game on its head.

Jordan Henderson (for Rice 89)
