England cannot win The Ashes but look to tie the series by winning the fifth Test at the oval.
Jos Buttler impressed on Day One, hitting 64 not out as England ended the day 271-8 after another familiarly disappointing batting display from the hosts.
England had earlier lost five wickets for 56 runs as they slid from 170-3 to 226-8.
They need Buttler to make a big impression on Friday morning and to stand his ground alongside Jack Leach, if they’re to put up a score that gives the bowling attack something to defend later in the day.
