Joe Root’s decision to send Australia in to bat on Thursday looks to have paid off as England bowled out the tourists for 179.
Although rain delayed play several times, Jorfa Archer and Stuart Broad were able to take full advantage of the overcast conditions, with Archer particularly impressing with figures of 6-45.
Marcus Labuschagne, Steve Smith’s replacement, threatened to score big before Ben Stokes trapped him lbw on 74.
England’s top order, with the exception of Rory Burns, have so far failed to impress in the series with Joe Denley, Jason Roy and Joe Root all struggling against the Australian bowling attack.
With sunnier conditions forecast for Headingley on day two, England will look to press home their advantage without the pressure of chasing down a big score.
The only concern will be for opener Jason Roy, who was struck on the head in nets and was a concussion doubt for this test, with Surrey’s Ollie Pope called up to be on standby.
