England were left frustrated on day one of the first Test against Australia after one of the great Ashes innings by Steve Smith.
Joe Root's bowlers reduced the tourists to 122-8 as they looked to dismiss them cheaply, but Smith, aided by tail-enders Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon, steered Australia to 284 all out.
Smith scored 144 from 219 balls with 16 fours and two sixes to almost single-handedly get his side up to a competitive total.
England's openers Rory Burns and Jason Roy negotiated two overs to reach 10 without loss late on day one and will look to get up towards and beyond their opponents' total.
