James Anderson will bat if and when required in the first Ashes Test but a view will be taken later as to whether he can bowl after he injured his right calf on Thursday.
England's record wicket-taker bowled only four overs on the opening morning before he was sent for a scan after feeling tightness in his calf.
Anderson had a tentative bowl on an Edgbaston practice strip before play on day three, where England resumed on 267 for four in response to Australia's 284 all out.
Friday's hero, Rory Burns, made his way back to the pavilion for 133 after nicking off, the decision standing after replays showed Nathan Lyon's heel was just behind the line.
After his dismissal, England's batters suddenly hit the wall.

A position of 282 for four became 300 for eight as Jonny Bairstow departed for eight, aiming a cut at Peter Siddle but only succeeding in edging to Sunrisers Hyderabad team-mate David Warner at first slip.
