England veteran Karen Carney hopes to see beers flying once again this summer

The beers were on Karen Carney the last time she watched England in the World Cup finals.

The Chelsea veteran joined in the nation’s jubilation as the Three Lions reached the semi-finals.

And she is hoping those scenes are recreated if the Lionesses manage a similar feat next month.

She said: “Last summer, I was in London in all the pub gardens, getting beer thrown all over me. I had my England hat on, everything – I loved it.

“I’m an England fan. I want us to do well. I hope the lads get behind us because we were desperate for them to do well.

“I went to France as well for the Euros. I was at the game where we played Russia in Marseille. I was petrified.

“It was one of the best things I’ve ever done – just following England and being a fan. It was wicked.”

Carney is heading to her fourth World Cup. It’s all a far cry from her first outing, back in 2007.

She added: “I don’t think anyone knew we were going. No one knew we had even qualified.

“That year I’d won the Quadruple with Arsenal and no one covered it either – despite the fact we were the best women’s team in the world.

“Now it’s come to where we are now. I can’t even imagine what would happen if we brought it home just how crazy it would go.”

England face one more World Cup warm up match against New Zealand on Saturday before kicking off the tournament against Scotland in Group D on June 9. They then take on Argentina on June 14 and Japan on June 19 hoping to make it through to the last 16.

The Lionesses are amongst the favourites to win the competition, with USA, France and Germany also heavily fancied.
