England v Scotland: Ex-Rangers star says Tartan army can play a part at Wembley

Stuart McCall insists Scotland can cause an upset against England on Friday after being impressed by the noises emanating from the camp.

Steve Clarke’s side travels to Wembley to face their arch rivals in a crucial second fixture in Group D at EURO 2020 after losing 2-0 to Czech Republic on Monday.

Former Motherwell boss McCall played against England in the same tournament, at the same venue 25 years ago and he’s optimistic about Scotland’s chances.

Scotland have qualified for their first major international tournament in 23 years and McCall has been quietly impressed by the mentality amongst the squad.

“We always have a chance,” said McCall on Scotland’s chances in London against the Auld Enemy.

“I was there in 81 to see John Robertson’s penalty and there were 70,000 Scots there. I think in 96 there were 7,000 Scots there although it sounded like 70,000.

“When we go there this time there will be 2,700 and I am sure that will sound like many more.

“The support will have a big part to play. Scotland will go in as under-dogs, as we did.

“You can’t be shouting from the rooftops about doing this or that, but you don’t want to have negativity saying it’s a tough group etc.

“It’s not, it’s a group where he’ll be saying go into one game at a time, go and do our best, be positive and look around the dressing room.

“If you hear the soundbites coming from the dressing room there is a belief in each other. Look at how we managed to get here, going over to Serbia and getting the result that we needed.

“There’s got to be that sense of daring to believe and going for it, so I think he’s set the right tone.”
