England v Poland: Five key players out to stop Roy Hodgson on Tuesday

Robert Lewandowski

Striker, Borussia Dortmund

A world-class striker who led his club to the Champions League final last season, scoring four goals in the first semi-final leg against Real Madrid, a 4-1 win for his club. Perfectly suited to lead an attack on his own because of his technique, strength and ability to shield the ball, his summer was overshadowed by consistent rumours that he wanted to join Bayern Munich. Has started the season well at Dortmund and is joint top goalscorer in the Bundesliga with six goals so far and recently revealed that he will join Bayern after this season. England's defence will have to be on their guard on Tuesday night, this man can score from nothing. Has not been as prolific for his country, however, and it was not long ago the Polish media were counting the minutes since his last goal for the national side

Jakub Blaszczykowski

Midfielder, Borussia Dortmund

Another of Poland's Dortmund contingent (the third, Lukasz Piszczek, is injured). Suffered the unimaginable horror of seeing his father kill his mother when he was 11 and was raised by his grandmother Felicja and uncle Jerzy Brzeczek, who once played for Poland and scored against England at Wembley in 1999. Kuba, as he is known, joined Dortmund from Wisla Krakow in 2007 and has just extended his contract to stay with the club until 2017. One of the most tireless workers in world football, he will fight until the end in an attempt to thwart England

Kamil Glik Central defender Torino

Glik scored the goal against England in the first game between the two sides in this qualifying campaign – the rain-delayed fixture in Warsaw a year ago. A tremendous influence, he is the first non-Italian captain of Torino since 1960. Left Poland for Real Madrid as a 19-year-old but only played for their third team before making a return to Poland and then on to Italy, Like Kuba, he is appreciated for his no-nonsense style to such an extent that an Italian rapper with the name of Willie Peyote recorded a song titled: "Glik" in which he makes fun of footballers diving and caring only about hair gel and their appearance. Glik is the complete opposite

Artur Boruc

Goalkeeper, Southampton

Has been a revelation this season in the Premier League's meanest defence with only two goals conceded in 630 minutes of football. He is now his country's No1 choice as well, having displaced Arsenal's Wojciech Szczesny after Euro 2012. Boruc's international career has – like his club career – had its ups and downs. He was dropped by Leo Beenhakker in 2009 after a bad performance played a huge part in Poland losing to Northern Ireland, with the manager saying the goalkeeper was "badly affected" by the events in Belfast. Boruc has returned a stronger man though and is, at the age of 33, in the form of his life

Grzegorz Krychowiak

Defensive, midfielder Reims

Has had his international breakthrough under the current national coach Waldemar Fornalik. Impressive in the game against England in Warsaw, he has become an automatic choice for his country in a destructive role in midfield. He too left Poland early, joining Bordeaux, and then Reims last summer. Tweets impressively in Polish and French (70 characters per language) and was part of the successful Polish Under-20 side in 2007 that beat Brazil 1-0 but then lost to eventual winners Argentina (who had Sergio Agüero, Claudio Yacob, Angel di María and Ever Banega in their side) in the last 16. Made his debut for senior Polish side at the age of 17
