England v Pakistan match at Sophia Gardens suffers humiliating delay as drainage lid gives way beneath bowler's feet

Glamorgan Cricket Club are no strangers to controversial moments surrounding their staging of international games.

In 2008 the one-day international between England and South Africa at Cardiff was abandoned because of heavy rain after only three overs were bowled.

The ground was criticised for the standard of its covers and the speed with which the equipment was brought on.

And then on Sunday in England's T20 match with Pakistan, in Cardiff, bowler David Willey was lucky to avoid injury when the ground gave way as he ran in to bowl.

A huge hole appeared as Willey was just about to reach the delivery crease, but his ankle just caught the edge of it and the Yorkshire paceman escaped serious harm.

Willey had run through what looked like a removable drainage lid just before the wicket, in his run up.

The 29-year-old was unable to complete his delivery and a dead ball was called by the umpire.

The game was subsequently delayed while ground staff repaired the cover in an embarrassing start to the T20.
