England v Italy in Newcastle: Ten bars and pubs near St James' Park

As Premier League football takes an international break, another sport is stealing the spotlight in Newcastle this weekend.

While England take on Bulgaria in a Euro 2020 qualifier, the national rugby team will warm up for the 2019 Rugby World Cup with a match against Italy on Friday night.

Thousands of fans are expected to descend on Newcastle so if you’re arriving in the city or just want to get in on the action, here’s 10 places near to the ground to enjoy pre and post match drinks.

And there's the added bonus of Newcastle Oktoberfest being on in Leazes Park, right next to St James'.

Nine, St James' Park

The closest one you’ll get to the field of play. Formerly known as Shearers, the place is sure to be brimming with pre and post match excitement as the match takes to the St James’ Park turf on Friday.

The Strawberry, 7-8 Strawberry Place

The pub has seen its fair share of football fans drowning their sorrows but has been the scene of plenty of celebration for other rugby events like Magic Weekends when it has enjoyed record takings.

Shark Club Gastro Bar, Sandman Signature Hotel, Heber Street

Popular week in and week out with stag dos due to its plentiful food and drink menu.

Bealim House, Gallowgate

Bealim House on Gallowgate, Newcastle (Newcastle Chronicle)

Formerly Fluid bar, the venue is a stone’s throw away from St James’ Park so is sure to enjoy brisk trade. It is also home to Newcastle Gin, and it's the only place you can buy it.

Rosie's Bar, Stowell Street

Situated in the heart of China Town, this traditional bar always has a great atmosphere. Again, it's just a short walk away from St James' Park.

The Newcastle Arms

A proper Newcastle boozer and a great one to soak up the pre and post-match atmosphere.

Trent House

A no frills kind of pub in the shadow of the RVI. Great beer and some cracking real ale.

The Hotspur

Right near Haymarket, the long standing Toon favourite isn't far away from the ground on Percy Street.

Bar Loco

Opposite Barker & Stonehouse and ideally placed for St James and has some tasty bites to eat as well as a range of drinks.

Three Bulls' Head

A stone's throw from the ground, it's been re-built in recent years and is known for its lively atmosphere.
