Here he is chasing down danger man Van PersiePhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianIn the 33rd minute Steven Gerrard goes off injured and shakes the hand of club team-mate Dirk Kuyt as he heads back to the bench. He was taken as a precaution as he has a tight hamstringPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianThis time Parker needs the assistance of Chris Smalling to deal with Van PersiePhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianDanny Wellbeck controls the ball in front of Jonny HeitingaPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianPhil Jones comes on to replace Smalling and it's not long before he's in the thick of it, though given Robben's reputation for going to ground rather easily shall we say, it may be unlikely that the England defender made much contact with the dutch midfielder. Much to England's chagrin, Robben managed to stay on his feet long enough in the 57th minute to put Holland in the lead with a magnificant goal. He picked up a loose ball 10 yards inside his own half and hared straight towards goal. He got to within 30 yards of the England goal, at which point Huntelaar's superb off-the-ball run distracted both Smalling and Cahill. Robben used Huntelaar by not using him, zipping away from Cahill on the edge of the box before driving a crisp low shot back across Hart and into the corner. He only beat one player, but that was still a brilliant and brutally decisive solo goalPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianJust one minute later Dirk Kuyt puts in a fantastic cross from the right and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar doubles Holland's lead as he powers a header past Joe Hart. Unfortunately in attempting to beat the Dutch striker to the ball, Chris Smalling only succeeded in bashing heads with Huntelaar. Dutch celebrations were cut short as they realised that both players were quite hurt. Chris Smalling seemed to take the brunt of the impact and was stretchered off to be replaced by Phil Jones. 2-0 to the visitorsPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianDaniel Sturridge is fouled by Stijn SchaarsPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianWith England trailing Pearce surveys the action before deciding whether or not to change thingsPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianIt's no wonder Sturridge looks disappointed he's just missed a good chance to get a goal back. Downing's cross from the left was knocked back by Welbeck to Baines, on the left side of the box. He mishit a cross-shot towards Sturridge, who got in front of Schaars on the six-yard line but scuffed an instinctive shot straight at Stekelenburg. His anticipation was excellent, and then the finish was tame. The ball was almost behind him, which made it more difficult than would otherwise have been the case, but he should have scored.Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianScott Parker plays a pass despite the challenge from Van Bommel and KuytPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianPearce was, as expected, vocal on the touchline as he directed his charges Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianDaniel Sturridge is named man of the match, which is a bit of a bizarre decision seeing as the youngster didn't start the game but came on as a sub, missed an easy chance to score and went off before the end. Especially as Robben got two goals for HollandPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianWith five minutes it seems like everyone is settling for a 2-0 Dutch win when Gary Cahill goes and pulls one back for England. Baines played a nice through pass to Cahill, who was fractionally ahead of the last defender as he ran from centre to left, and he cleverly shifted the ball away from the sliding Mathijsen before screwing a shot through Stekelenburg from six yardsPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianAs the clock ticks into injury time, England come again as Walcott, on the edge of the box, touches the ball off to Phil Jones, who splits the defence with a terrific first-time through pass. It found Young, eight yards from goal to the right of centre, and he dinked the ball neatly over the advancing keeperPhotograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianJust when England think they've got themselves out of jail to get earned a draw, Arjen Robben goes up the other end and his smart finish, via a deflection makes it 3-2 Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianThere's hardly any time for anyone else to do anything meaningful before the final whistle. So the game finishes 3-2 Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianThe dejected faces of Scott Parker and Gary Cahill tell the other side of the story.
