France and England are readying themselves for an emotional night at Wembley Stadium as an international friendly takes place as a show of sporting solidarity after the Paris attacks. Wembley’s arch will once again be lit up in tricolour red, white and blue, while the national slogan of Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité will be displayed on screens along Wembley Way. England supporters attending the game are encouraged to join in with the French national anthem La Marseillaise.
Are you planning on singing La Marseillaise today as a show of respect? Share your videos with us. If you’re attending the game at Wembley this evening, and joining the crowd singing the French national anthem, we’d also like to see those videos too.
Here‘s a famous performance of La Marseillaise by Mireille Mathieu from 1989 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower.
La Marseillaise: full lyrics
Allons, enfants de la patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé.
Contre nous, de la tyrannie
L’étendard sanglant est levé.
Entendez-vous, dans les campagnes,
Mugir ces féroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras
Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes.
Aux armes, citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons!
Qu’un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons.
The Sunday Times columnist India Knight has helpfully put together a phonetic version:
