England U19s hand Elliot Anderson a Three Lions debut at St George's Park

Elliot Anderson was handed his England debut in a friendly against Arsenal Under-23s in a game played at St George's Park.

The Geordie played at number 10 after impressing in training with England Under-19s this week in a Three Lions X1 and shone again in a 45 minute cameo.

England were 2-0 up at half-time and went on to win 6-1 with Anderson catching the eye in his first match in an England shirt.

The English FA took advantage of Anderson not getting what would have been a surprise call-up to the Scotland senior side.

Having played for Scotland at various youth levels, Anderson found himself just off Steve Clarke's radar for forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Scots have been keeping an eye on Anderson's rise through the Newcastle ranks and move up to the senior squad with former Toon midfielder Kevin Dillon a regular at games.

But Steve Bruce has opted against handing him further appearances since he made his debut at the Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup.

He added to that experience with a Premier League debut in the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal in January and hasn't been used since.

When asked by the Chronicle why Whitley Bay youngster Anderson was yet to get further game-time, Bruce said on March 11: "If I had to put him in, then I would put him in.

"But he is young and inexperienced.

"I think what I need at the moment is all the experience I can that can handle the situation.

"We have a very good young player on our hands.

"Let's not forget he is only 18."

It remains to be seen whether Anderson gets a chance against Spurs despite Newcastle's dire need for some extra spark and creativity.
