England team doctor sensationally quits on eve of Rugby World Cup

The RFU has confirmed that England's team doctor has left his role.

The news comes little over a day before England kick off their World Cup campaign against Tonga.

It has emerged that Phil Riley had in fact quit his role as England men’s senior team doctor following the team's final tournament warm-up match - a victory over Italy in Newcastle, which took place on September 6.

That was two days before England flew out to Japan to begin their World Cup preparations.

Riley has huge sporting pedigree having previosuly worked with Manchester United and cycling's Team Sky.

According to the Independent Riley left his role due to “personal reasons”.]

It is understood he has been replaced by Rob Young - the man who he replaced when he joined England last October.
