England suffered the worst possible start to the Ashes when Rory Burns was bowled by Mitchell Starc with the first ball of the series.
Captain Joe Root won the toss and opted to bat first, with England looking to post a big first innings total.
However, it was Australia who drew first blood as Starc castled Burns with a full ball that cannoned into leg stump.
It was only the fourth time in Ashes history that a wicket has fallen off the first ball of a Test.
Speaking on commentary, Australian legend Shane Warne said: "That looked like a half-volley at leg-stump that he missed. He got too far across.
"It's a great start for the Aussies, couldn't wish for a better start. The old half-volley at leg-stump has bowled him."
Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, former England bowler Steven Finn said: "Sometime those really full, straight ones cause Burns a problem early in his innings.
"It won't be how Starc imagined taking his first wicket of the series."
However, former England captain Alastair Cook offered a nugget of hope for supporters, pointing out that England were 0-1 in the first Test during the 2010/11 Ashes series as well.
In that game, Andrew Strauss was caught at gully by Michael Hussey off the third ball of the Test from Ben Hilfenhaus.
England went on to win that series 3-1, drawing the first Test after Strauss, Cook and Jonathan Trott all scored hundreds in the second innings.
Soon after Burns' dismissal, Dawid Malan was caught behind for six in the fourth over, with debutant Alex Carey taking a simple catch off Josh Hazlewood.
"It's wonderful bowling," Finn said of the delivery Hazlewood produced to get rid of Malan. "It's wobble seam in order to get the movement off the grassy wicket. It leaves Malan from a beautiful length."
