England stars 'raring to go' to defy boo boys and get World Cup campaign back on track

England stars have vowed to defy the boo boys and get their World Cup campaign back on track against Wales tomorrow.

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford, 25, is “raring to go” in the Battle of Britain clash against Rob Page’s side at the 45,000-seater Ahmad bin Ali Stadium at 7pm.

And he said the Three Lions are keen to avoid a repeat of Friday’s dire 0-0 draw with the USA, when they were booed off the pitch by a section of frustrated fans.

He said: “It’s not a nice feeling. But to be honest, we don’t need the fans to boo us to know we’ve not played as well as we could have done.

“The first thing [manager] Gareth Southgate said to us afterwards was that we are in a very strong position.

“The message was ‘don’t beat yourselves up, don’t be down’. He added: “I’m raring to go.” England have to avoid a heavy defeat to go through to the last 16.

Wales have to win by four goals or more, or beat England by any score and hope Iran v USA ends in a draw.

To help lift the mood, England stars had morale-boosting visits from their wives, girlfriends and other family members on Saturday.

Despite Friday’s result, there’s a lot of optimism among the 3,000 England fans in Qatar. Matt Roberts, 34, of Chelmsford, Essex, is staying with friends in the £82-a-night Ras Bu Fontas fan village near Doha.

He said: “I still believe we can win against Wales. We have done enough to go through.”

His friend Louis Spiteri, 32, a consultant from Bromley, South East London, added: “We have tickets for the final, just in case, and would have to book flights to come back.

“But we will have to play much better than we did on Friday.”

There was less optimism among Wales fans. Craig Gabb, 40, of Rhymney, South Wales, said: “We need a miracle but we have beaten the big teams before. There is always hope.”

Mathematician Hannah Fry calculated that Wales have just a 2.2% chance of scoring the four goals they need against England.

Her data shows that England have a 65% chance of a straight win.

Welsh singing legend Bonnie Tyler, 71, told the BBC ’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg yesterday: “We’ve got to believe. I need a hero – come on, boys.”
