'England stars' Covid chaos shows virus is dangerous and unpredictable - like our PM'

England stars being forced into self-isolation after contact with a Covid-infected Scotland player is another reminder that this virus is not yet beaten.

We hope Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount will turn out not to have the virus after coming close to Scotland’s Billy Gilmour.

But their scare shows that, despite fewer Covid hospital admissions and deaths, we have not yet won. The rise in cases is worrying.

This virus is dangerous and unpredictable.

It’s a shame our Prime Minister is too.

His own former adviser Dominic Cummings likened him to an out-of-control supermarket trolley, and he has displayed an uncanny ability to make the wrong calls on big decisions.

So Boris Johnson saying the prospects of lifting England’s remaining restrictions on July 19 were “looking good” was not reassuring.

His statement today echoed his assertions “nothing in the data” suggested the restrictions wouldn’t end on June 21.

He then U-turned, of course. Let’s hope we are not facing another false dawn.

Bloody outrage

The inquiry into the blood contamination scandal at a school for disabled children is revealing tragedy after tragedy.

With 72 lives lost, it is rightly described as the worst treatment disaster in NHS history.

It is heartbreaking that pupils were given a product contaminated with HIV and hepatitis as part of their treatment for haemophilia at Treloar College in the 1970s and 80s.

How it happened, and the cover-up that followed, are unforgivable scandals.

But this isn’t about revenge.

It is about scrutiny, accountability, justice... and doing everything possible to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.
